Simple Lifestyle Changes for A Better Health

Several modifiable lifestyle factors are often linked to high ultra-processed foods (UPF) consumption.

Replacing these habits involves shifting toward more nutrient-dense choices and addressing related behaviors.

Here are simple lifestyle changes to help replace UPF habits:

1. Swap Industrial Snacks for Whole Foods

UPFs are industrial formulations that include chips, salty snacks, cookies, sweets, and processed meats. A simple change is to replace these with minimally processed alternatives to avoid "biologically active food additives" and high levels of added sugar and salt.

  • Action: Replace packaged cookies and sweets with whole fruits to reduce refined sugar intake.

  • Action: Choose whole grains or homemade options over industrial breads and breakfast cereals.

2. Prioritize Fiber and Essential Micronutrients

UPFs are typically low in fiber, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins. Deficiencies in these nutrients are specifically linked to an increased risk of depression.

  • Action: Increase your intake of high-fiber foods (like vegetables and legumes) to support the gut-brain microbiome axis, which helps regulate mood.

  • Action: Focus on magnesium- and potassium-rich whole foods to help counteract the nutritional gaps left by a processed diet.

3. Replace Sugary Beverages with Water or Plain Dairy

Non-dairy beverages (sugar-sweetened drinks) and certain dairy beverages are major contributors to UPF intake.

  • Action: Switch from sodas and industrial fruit drinks to water or unprocessed milk products to significantly lower daily calorie and sugar intake.

4. Increase Physical Activity

Individuals who consumed the most UPF also tend to have lower levels of physical activity.

  • Action: Incorporating regular exercise can be a powerful "lifestyle medicine" that complements a better diet in managing mental health.

5. Improve Sleep Duration

Studies have found that high UPF consumers often had inadequate sleep (less than 7 hours per night).

  • Action: Establishing a consistent sleep schedule can help mitigate the psychological symptoms that might otherwise lead to "stress eating" or a reliance on convenience foods.

  • Action: Reducing UPFs may also help prevent nocturnal awakenings caused by high saturated fat and sugar intake, creating a positive cycle for both diet and rest.

By taking action in making small changes in one’s lifestyle can have a big impact on both physical and mental health.
